COATINGS
Standard Charcoal DLC, Gold (TiN) or Bronze (Si) are our recommendations. They combine the best combination of wear resistance, low friction, price and coating adhesion/coverage/surface roughness.
**Uncoated Raw Titanium is offered but is not recommended for heavy duty usage as it will be more prone to scratches/damage/wear (Titanium is relatively soft compared to steel). Back-drag will still be lower than the average ratchet, but possibly slightly higher than our coated versions.
Dark Iridescent Chrome and Iridescent DLC coatings are not controllable and the colors vary GREATLY. Examples shown below.
Iridescent DLC is exceptionally thin (10x thinner than normal coatings) so it does not have great damage tolerance.
| COATING | SURFACE HARDNESS (VICKERS) |
THICKNESS (μm) | FRICTION COEF. |
| UNCOATED TITANIUM | 400 | 0.4 | |
| UNCOATED SUPERALLOY | 550 | - | |
| CHROME PLATING (FOR COMPARISON) | 950 | 20-40 | 0.2 |
| DLC (CHARCOAL) | 1600 | 3 | 0.1-0.2 |
| TiN (GOLD) | 3000 | 3 | 0.6 |
| CrN (DARK IRIDESCENT) | 3000 | 7 | 0.5 |
| Si (BRONZE) | 3800 | 2-4 | 0.4 |
| AlCrN (BLUE-GRAY) | 4490 | 5 | 0.35 |
| DLC (IRIDESCENT) | 6600 | 0.3 | <0.1 |
All custom-machined titanium Torx fasteners are finished in a matching coating.
